In some regions, chemicals like methyl bromide or solarization (inactive solar heating) are used to disinfect the soil for growing crops such as strawberries, which have shallow roots.

To preserve these disinfectant chemicals and prevent their evaporation and leaching from the soil, plastic covers are employed. The goal of these covers is to safeguard the soil against pests, diseases, viruses, and harmful bacteria.
